“เพลงลูกทุ่ง” หมายความว่า เพลงจากลูกของทุ่งนาท้องไร่ ผลของการผสมผสาน กลืนกลาย และปฏิสังสรรค์ระหว่างชีวิต สังคม ท้องถิ่น การอพยพย้ายถิ่นฐาน และโลกาภิวัตน์

Pleng Luk Thung literally means “the songs of the children of the fields” — the fruit of the blending, merging, and interplay of life, society, locality, migration, and globalization.

ลูกทุ่งเริ่มหยั่งรากในผืนดินไทยมาตั้งแต่ก่อนสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง หล่อเลี้ยงด้วยแร่ธาตุดินเดิม ลมแผ่วพลิ้ว พายุโหด น้ำจากกี่ต้นธาร แสงแดด แสงจันทร์ วันแล้วคืนเล่า หลายชีวิตทอดตัวลงเป็นปุ๋ย จึงผลิแตกกิ่งก้านใบดอก เติบโตผ่านฤดูกาลอันผันแปรจวบจนปัจจุบัน

Luk Thung first took root in Thai soil before the Second World War, nourished by the minerals of the native earth, by soft breezes and violent storms, by water from countless streams, by sunlight and moonlight, day after day and night after night, as many lives lay down to become its compost. And so it budded into branch and leaf and bloom, growing through changing seasons into the present day.

These are the traits that form the very identity of Thai Luk Thung:

แม้เพลงลูกทุ่งยังได้รับความนิยมสูง ทว่าลักษณะเฉพาะเหล่านี้กลับค่อย ๆ จางหาย ลูกทุ่งกำลังเดินทางอย่างเสียสมดุล ขาข้างหนึ่งรุดไปข้างหน้าจนลืมราก อีกข้างหนึ่งกลับปักหลักอยู่กับที่จนไม่อาจก้าวไปไหน

Though Luk Thung remains hugely popular, these traits are quietly fading. Luk Thung now travels out of balance: one leg racing ahead until it forgets its roots, the other planted so firmly in place that it cannot move at all.

หากจะมีแนวเพลงใดสะท้อนความเป็นไทยได้อย่างกว้างขวางและลึกซึ้งที่สุด เพลงลูกทุ่งคือหนึ่งในคำตอบนั้น และหากจะมีแนวเพลงใดที่สามารถเชื่อมโยงผู้คนจากหลากหลายภูมิหลังเข้าไว้ด้วยกัน เพลงลูกทุ่งก็ยังคงเป็นคำตอบ

If any genre reflects what it means to be Thai most broadly and most deeply, Luk Thung is one of those answers; and if any genre can bind together people of every background, Luk Thung is that answer still.

ด้วยเหตุนี้ การเดินทางของเพลงลูกทุ่งจึงมิใช่เพียงเรื่องของดนตรี แต่ยังเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการเดินทางของความเป็นไทยเอง ถ้าเพลงลูกทุ่งสามารถก้าวข้ามขอบเขตที่เคยถูกจำกัดไว้ ย่อมหมายความว่า ความเป็นไทยเองก็สามารถก้าวข้ามขอบเขตเหล่านั้นได้เช่นกัน ซึ่งการก้าวข้ามนั้น ไม่อาจเกิดขึ้นได้ด้วยการตัดขาดจากรากเดิม และย่อมไม่อาจเกิดขึ้นได้ด้วยการยึดติดอยู่กับรูปแบบเดิมเช่นกัน

And so the journey of Luk Thung is not a matter of music alone, but part of the journey of Thai-ness itself. If Luk Thung can cross the borders once drawn around it, it surely means that Thai-ness itself can cross those borders too. But that crossing cannot come by severing the old roots, nor by clinging to the old forms.

เพลงหลานทุ่ง จึงถือกำเนิดขึ้นในฐานะรุ่นต่อมาของเพลงลูกทุ่ง เพื่อสืบสานและต่อยอดมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมที่เพลงลูกทุ่งได้สร้างไว้ มิใช่เพื่อรักษาเพลงลูกทุ่งให้คงอยู่ในรูปแบบเดิม หากเพื่อพาเพลงลูกทุ่งเดินทางต่อไป

And so Pleng Larn Thung is born as Luk Thung’s next generation — to carry forward and build upon the cultural inheritance Luk Thung created, not to keep it frozen in its old form, but to let it journey onward.

เพลงหลานทุ่งเชื่อว่า วัฒนธรรมมิใช่สิ่งที่หยุดนิ่ง หากเป็นกระบวนการแห่งการเรียนรู้ การปรับตัว และการสร้างสรรค์อยู่เสมอ เราจึงนำเพลงลูกทุ่ง ร้อยกรอง ศิลปะพื้นบ้าน และภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่น เข้าสู่บทสนทนากับโลกสมัยใหม่ เพื่อร่วมสำรวจคำถามสำคัญที่มนุษยชาติกำลังเผชิญ
